1962: The War in the Hills Web Series Storyline

Major Suraj Singh of the Kumaon Regiment obtains important border information in 1962. In the meanwhile, his unit’s men grapple with friendship, love, competition, and marriage. China’s imperialistic objectives are revealed to India. When Radha chooses Kishan over Karan in Rewari, a love triangle explodes. While India continues to pursue its Forward Policy, the Chinese have delegated command of their attack to Major Lin. Simultaneously, Rewari is preparing for Sepoy Gopal’s wedding. When they reclaim Tooka Post, Suraj’s painstaking preparation pays off. The win, however, is fleeting, as the situation rapidly deteriorates. Hardham goes to extraordinary lengths to seek justice for Gopal.  C Company is sent to Shaksa La by Major Khattar, and the only way to get to the position is on foot. They quickly learn that bravery is insufficient to navigate the treacherous terrain. Suraj wants to leave Shagun since he knows her secret, but she persuades him to travel to Chuhul HQ. Furthermore, no one thinks the Chinese will strike from Shaksa La save Suraj. Radar returns to Chuhul HQ, bloodied and battered, and narrates the events of Shaksa La. Jaya and Shagun must contend with their families and demons at home.

The series was originally scheduled to debut in 2021, but was pushed back to November 2020 to coincide with the completion of the 13th season of the Indian Premier League. It is mostly due to anti-Chinese sentiment in India after the Galwan Valley conflicts in June 2020. However, owing to a variety of factors, the planned publication was postponed. The first look of the series was revealed on social media channels on January 26, 2021, coinciding with Republic Day, and included references to the 2020 Galwan Valley fight. On February 12, 2021, the series’ official trailer was uploaded on YouTube. On February 26, 2021, the series launched on Disney+ Hotstar.

The plot revolves on Major Suraj Singh (Abhay Deol), who has been tasked with leading a contingent of Indian troops in combat against the Chinese. He commands a company of troops, the most of whom are from Rewari, Haryana. To our astonishment, none of them seem or speak in a Haryana-like manner. The villagers likewise seem to have been thrown into the scenarios without much thought. They don’t have a Haryanvi accent, and they don’t dress like people from the Northern state. Akash’s Marathi accent may be heard at times.

The poorly staged fights are the most frustrating. In interviews, the performers said that they filmed the sequences in Ladakh’s harsh terrain. However, one glance at the fighting scenes reveals that everything is a hoax. The visual effects are awful, and troops are just lying to the enemy and shooting them with a pistol. It would not be an insult to claim that the online series defies every fundamental narrative guideline.

  While the online episodes are based on two separate incidents in Indian history, both series employ the same way to tell the story: a wrinkled old person telling their millennial grandkids battle memories. Hello, ingenuity! One thing we couldn’t figure out is why the creators didn’t utilize Mahie Gill’s voice as the elderly woman to narrate the narrative. With a little make-up and cosmetics, she’d be just as unattractive as the woman who recounts the battle narrative in the play.
