Mask Girl: Review, Story, Cast, Episodes, Release Date, Budget & More

Mask Girl

“Mask Girl” is a 2023 South Korean black comedy crime thriller written and directed by Kim Yong-hoon, starring Lee Han-byeol, Nana, Go Hyun-jung, Ahn Jae-hong, and Yeom Hye-ran. This seven-episode Netflix miniseries dropped in August 2023 and immediately grabbed attention for its bold, unconventional storytelling. Based on the popular Naver webtoon by Mae-mi and Hee-se published between 2015 and 2018, the show explores dark themes of beauty standards, obsession, and revenge through stunning cinematography and fearless performances. What makes it truly unique is how three different actresses portray the main character across different time periods, creating a fragmented yet cohesive narrative. The series doesn’t shy away from graphic content, tackling society’s toxic beauty culture with raw honesty and dark humor that’ll either captivate or disturb you—there’s really no middle ground with this one.

Mask Girl Storyline

Kim Mo-mi is an office worker whose insecurities about her appearance have crushed her childhood dreams of stardom. By night, she transforms into “Mask Girl,” a mysterious camgirl who performs seductive dances while hiding her face behind a mask, finally receiving the validation she’s always craved. Her double life spirals into chaos after a drunken encounter with her awkward coworker Ju Oh-nam, who’s obsessed with her online persona. What starts as one terrible decision triggers a domino effect of violence, murder, and identity transformations. As bodies pile up and Mo-mi repeatedly reinvents herself to escape her past, revenge-driven characters converge in an explosive collision course.

Mask Girl Review

“Mask Girl” is audaciously dark and visually stunning, featuring fearless performances especially from Ahn Jae-hong and Yeom Hye-ran. The unconventional structure with multiple actresses works brilliantly, though some plot points feel rushed in just seven episodes. Graphic, twisted, and unapologetically feminist, it’s a compelling thriller that boldly critiques beauty standards while delivering shocking entertainment.
