Thalaivii is a 2021 Indian Tamil, Hindi language drama film directed by A. L. Vijay. It is produced by Vishnu Vardhan Induri, Shailesh R Singh, Brinda Prasad under the banners of Zee Studios Vibri Motion Pictures Karma Media And Entertainment Gothic Entertainment Sprint Films. The film star Kangana Ranaut, and, Arvind Swami are in title roles. The music was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar.

On Jayalalithaa’s birthday, February 24, 2019, the film was formally released. The film was originally named Thalaivi in Tamil and Jaya in Hindi, but the directors subsequently decided to distribute it in both languages under the title Thalaivi. Upon its release, the film garnered a mixed to good reception from reviewers, who commended Ranaut and Swamy’s outstanding performances while criticising the storyline. Thalaivii Movie Storyline

Jayalalithaa, a representative of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, confronts M. Karunanidhi, the incumbent chief minister, about the accusations of corruption, imprisonment, and spying levied against her and her party in 1989. She requests his departure and defends the previous Chief Minister, M. G. Ramachandran, as a true servant of the people. The opposing party, on the other hand, challenges her ties with MGR, sparking a scuffle when Jaya is slapped. Some governing MPs want to strip down Jaya; equating herself to Draupadi, Jaya promises she would only return to the session if she has been elected CM.

Before the film’s distribution on OTT platforms, the creators of Thalaivii declared a two-week gap for the Hindi version and a four-week release for the Tamil and Telugu versions. PVR Cinemas and INOX, two multiplex companies, have voiced their displeasure with the plan and have called for a four-week buffer to be implemented across all language versions. With the negotiations, Ranaut believes they can find a solution so that “the Hindi version may also get love and respect on the big screen.”

The film, which had a budget of 100 crore, made 4.75 crore in its first week at the box office. According to the Indian Express, the film had a poor start. On Day 1, the Hindi version made Rs. 20 lakhs, whereas the Tamil Nadu version made Rs. 80 lakhs. The total collection on Day 1 was estimated to be Rs.1.25 crore.

With regard to the accords struck by producers with OTT platforms, Thalaivii was published on Netflix (Hindi) 2 weeks later and on Amazon Prime (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam) 4 weeks later after a restricted and single-screen theatrical release in India. On Christmas Day, 25 December 2021, Zee Cinema broadcasted the Hindi version of the film for the first time in the globe.

Thalaivii Movie Review

Kangana Ranaut, who portrays the title part, unleashes her internal rogue and unwavering self-assurance to demonstrate that she is not second best to anybody. In a manner, her movie role imitates her actual life in this scenario. She gives a strong performance as a forlorn lady who continues emerging from the ashes like a phoenix. With calm resolve and a commanding presence, she lifts the conventional writing, deftly not imitating Jaya but nailing the tone and subtleties of her role. Kangana Ranaut is remarkable as a woman rejected for loving openly and profoundly.

Arvind Swami as MGR, her guru and the wind behind her wings, is the ideal partner for the actress. He offers a sense of serenity to the raging tempest that has engulfed Jaya. Swami’s demeanour and body language are excellent. There could not have been a greater choice for the role of Tamil icon and person’s leader than Rajinikanth.
