Abbie, Jerry, Tom , Rennie, David, Lee, John, and Bobby plan to demonstrate during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August 1968. They are caught and charged with attempting to instigate a riot five months later. Attorney General John N. Mitchell names Tom Foran and Richard Schultz as investigators, while William Kunstler and Leonard Weinglass represent all of the defendants save Seale.
