Jury Duty: Review, Story, Cast, Episodes, Release Date, Budget & More

Jury Duty

“Jury Duty” is an American reality hoax sitcom created by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, premiering on Amazon Freevee on April 7, 2023. The groundbreaking series stars Ronald Gladden as a juror completely unaware the entire trial is fake, with James Marsden co-starring alongside an ensemble cast of actors. This genre-bending documentary-style comedy received widespread acclaim, earning three Emmy nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Marsden, plus two Golden Globe nominations and a Peabody Award. Created by former writers from “The Office,” the eight-episode series represents a massive logistical achievement, maintaining an elaborate hoax for weeks without breaking character. A second season was confirmed in February 2025, already filmed at a corporate retreat setting in Agoura Hills, and will stream on Amazon Prime Video following Freevee’s discontinuation. Available now on Prime Video completely free, this innovative show blends hidden-camera comedy with workplace sitcom warmth, creating something genuinely unique that celebrates human kindness rather than exploiting it.

Jury Duty Storyline

Solar contractor Ronald Gladden from San Diego responds to what he believes is a documentary about the American jury system, unaware he’s actually the center of an elaborate reality hoax. Every person surrounding him, fellow jurors, the judge, lawyers, witnesses, even celebrity alternate juror James Marsden are skilled improvisational actors performing scripted roles. As Ronald serves as foreperson on an increasingly absurd civil case involving a restaurant slip-and-fall, bizarre situations escalate. Marsden plays a narcissistic version of himself obsessed with his career, while other jurors display increasingly eccentric behaviors. Throughout the surreal experience, Ronald demonstrates remarkable patience, empathy, and leadership, completely oblivious that every chaotic moment has been meticulously orchestrated specifically for him.

Jury Duty Review

“Jury Duty” is an absolute triumph that proves reality television can be genuinely heartwarming rather than cruel. Ronald Gladden’s authentic kindness, patience, and emotional intelligence make him television’s most lovable accidental star, his genuine reactions to absurd situations create both hilarious and touching moments. James Marsden delivers brilliantly as a self-absorbed actor, committing fully to improvisation alongside talented comedic performers who never break character. The reveal in the finale is profoundly moving, with Gladden’s gracious response validating the creators’ faith in humanity. Yes, ethical questions exist about deceiving someone so elaborately, but the show’s respect and affection for Ronald shine throughout. It’s innovative, hilarious, surprisingly emotional television that celebrates human decency. The upcoming second season faces enormous pressure matching the magic lightning-in-a-bottle quality of finding another Ronald, but this original remains essential viewing, proof that kindness makes the best television.
