Playful Kiss

“Playful Kiss” is a 2010 South Korean romantic comedy starring Kim Hyun-joong and Jung So-min, based on the Japanese manga Itazura Na Kiss by Tada Kaoru. The series aired on MBC from September to October 2010 for 16 episodes, marking the third television adaptation of this beloved manga after the Taiwanese versions. This was Kim Hyun-joong’s first leading drama role following his explosive popularity from “Boys Over Flowers,” attracting massive international attention. While it received low domestic ratings in the five to seven percent range, the drama was sold to 12 countries for approximately $3.4 million and streamed 70 million times on Viki, developing a devoted cult following worldwide. The show’s success even spawned a YouTube epilogue series following the couple’s married life. With its sweet, wholesome storyline devoid of typical K-drama villains, “Playful Kiss” offers pure rom-com comfort food that’s perfect for anyone young at heart.

Playful Kiss Review

“Playful Kiss” is an adorable guilty pleasure that divides viewers you’ll either find Ha-ni’s relentless pursuit endearing or frustrating. Jung So-min brings infectious charm to the ditzy yet lovable protagonist, while Kim Hyun-joong perfectly embodies the cold genius slowly melting. The drama shines during high school episodes with genuine laughs and sweet moments, though it loses momentum in college years when Ha-ni’s character growth stalls disappointingly. Some viewers criticize her dependency and one-sided devotion as outdated, while others see her genuine heart and persistence as refreshingly honest about how real first love feels. The supporting cast adds warmth, the OST is catchy, and despite predictable plotting, it delivers feel-good romance without heavy melodrama. Perfect for lighthearted viewing when you need something undemanding and sweet. Just don’t expect complex character development embrace the simple charm or skip it entirely.
