Sylvie’s Love Movie Storyline
Sylvie is waiting in the foyer of Town Hall in New York City in 1962, while Robert is playing the saxophone in a music studio. Sylvie spots Robert on the pavement outside a theatre a few shortly afterward.
Sylvie’s father recruits Robert to work at his Harlem record shop five years ago. Robert is a member of The Dickie Brewster Quartet, a Detroit-based up-and-coming jazz outfit. Sylvie and Robert become friends because of their mutual love of music, and Robert ultimately invites Sylvie and her cousin Mona to a performance. Despite her engagement to a rich man called Lacy who is serving in the Korean War, Mona has a flirtation with Robert’s bandmate Chico, and Sylvie finally has a passionate romance with Robert. The Dickie Brewster Quartet’s manager, a lady known only as the Countess, gets them a gig in Paris some time later. Robert invites Sylvie to accompany him. Sylvie refuses, but as he leaves, she bids him farewell, concealing the fact that she is pregnant with his child so as not to jeopardise his career.

Sylvie’s Love Movie Review
As you may have guessed, “Sylvie’s Love” isn’t the kind of film where folks relax, get high, and blithely submit to the turmoil of life in a world where the rhythm is really not easy to comprehend. The foreboding tv drama of finding love supercharges everything and everyone around Robert and Sylvie after they share their first kiss.
A Carol style flashback portrays their love as an existentially predestined sequence of near misses and quiet refrains, which took them back together a half-decade later. Attacks on the heart Kids of secret love! Miles Davis, please! In the midst of such flamboyant drama, the whole civil rights struggle is reduced to a single wide shot. It’s just enough to convince you that Asomugha’s acting was required to be somewhat lifeless and humourless in order for the rest of the film to avoid falling to its fever.
“Sylvie’s Love” curriculum too far in the other way, with most of the movie’s squibbly later part seeming like the tale is spinning its tyres to buy time before the unavoidable. It’s never a matter of whether Robert and Sylvie are supposed to be with each other; it’s always a question of how they’ll make it work. And it’s not societal friction, or the shifting sound of the music business, or even Sylvie’s family that stands in the way of their shared enjoyment.
