Marianne

“Marianne” is a chilling French horror series that dropped on Netflix in September 2019, quickly earning its reputation as one of the platform’s scariest offerings. Created by Samuel Bodin, this eight-episode limited series stars Victoire Du Bois as Emma Larsimon, a successful horror novelist who discovers her fictional nightmares are bleeding into reality. Filmed in the atmospheric coastal town of Elden, France, the show combines psychological terror with supernatural horror in uniquely disturbing ways. With its creepy atmosphere, jump scares that actually work, and a witch antagonist that will haunt your dreams, “Marianne” became an instant cult favorite among horror enthusiasts worldwide, though Netflix controversially cancelled it after just one season.

Marianne Review

“Marianne” is genuinely terrifying in ways that most modern horror series aren’t. It understands that true horror comes from atmosphere and dread, not just gore and cheap thrills, though it delivers those too when needed. Victoire Du Bois gives a compelling performance as a flawed protagonist forced to face literal demons from her past. The witch herself is nightmare fuel, with practical effects and unsettling imagery that stick with you long after the credits roll. The French setting adds an unfamiliar eeriness for international audiences, making everything feel slightly off-kilter. While the pacing occasionally drags in middle episodes, the payoff is worth it. It’s criminal that Netflix cancelled this after one season, it deserved so much more.
