The protagonist of the tale is a young woman by the name of Saira, who together with her mother endures a great deal of abuse from both her stern paternal grandmother and her stepmother. Although she and Kiran, her half-sister, get along well. As a result of his second marriage, Saira’s father now has two wives and two daughters: Kiran, who is the daughter of his second wife, and Saira, who is the daughter of his first wife.
